The topic may have been discussed widely on the internet, but the views which have been presented are mostly from the developed countries. I am from India and over here a iPhone 5c cost around $700 while Samsung's Galaxy Grand which is one of the popular phones in India costs only $400.
In a country where average income of a urban middle class person is around $500 to $600, buying a Samsung Grands makes sense than a iPhone 5c. Moreover iPhone 5c is a second class iPhone is only $200 less than 5s the flagship device of apple.
Moreover the cost factor is also the reason why iPhone 4 & iPhone 4s are selling more than iPhone 5c.
Tim Cook may feel that as iPhone 5s is selling like hot cakes Apple is making lots of profits, but what he is missing out is the whole of the developing markets. In this market Samsung by selling low priced phones is making bulk profits which in the overall picture is giving them a huge edge in market share and profitability. In the long run Apple will be pushed over by Samsung by quantity if not in quality.
In the previous years we have seen Apple was nearly doomed by using premium prices for their Macintosh product line, while Microsoft with their Windows product line gained a huge marketshare. Now in most of the developing countries many urban computer literate people who cant stop from facebooking their each and every life event have not even heard of Mac OS, on the other hand any computer literate even from far flung rural areas know what is Windows. Many even thinks that any Computer whatever it may be cant run without Windows in it.Such is the penetration of Microsoft. All corporate and government offices run on Windows system and the most common pre requisite in a job application requires a candidate to know Microsoft Office suite.
In the same way now the most fab thing is owning a touch screen phone from Samsung because it has become the symbol of coolness and usefulness, not to mention the affordable price range.
In the price conscious developing markets brands like Micromax sell much faster than a premium priced iPhone which most people dont even know of.
Dear Apple we, your customers dearly love you, please for the sake of us, please please make some products which is affordable to all and not only for the ultra rich. And in the long run dont become a Blackberry.
