This month Samsung has started selling its new Galaxy Grand
2 smartphone, which is an upgrade to the popular Galaxy grand. The two models
have a lot of differences and the Grand 2 is lot more powerful and updated than
its predecessor.
The Grand is powered by a quad core 1.2 GHz processor from
Qualcom, and an Adreno 305 GPU. Memory wise, it has got 1.5 GB of RAM and an
internal storage of 8 GB, which can be expandable upto 64 GB by external Micro
SD card. It has an 8 MP rear camera with flash and a 1.9 MP front facing
camera. Its features include Android 4.3
Jelly Bean, a 5.2 inch 720p display and also include a 2,600 mAh battery. It also boasts of being the second handset
offered by Samsung to come with faux leather back, which gives a premium look
to the handset. Grand 2 is priced at Rs 23,000 in the Indian market.
Many factors come into play for a smart phone to become popular
in a particular market. Specifications, price range, brand name are the 3 most
important reasons for a mobile phones success.
Specification wise Grand 2 is impressive. The Qualcom
chipset and the Adreno GPU may not be the best, but at the price point, they
are quite good. Also the camera with 8 MP and video recording capability of 1080p
@ 30fps is better than the other phones at that price range. Its specs are much better than Moto G and Sony’s
Xperia series of handsets at that price point.
Moreover brand wise Samsung is much better than Micromax or
Karbonn, in terms of aftersales service or brand name.
Samsung has also priced it perfectly, exactly at the bracket
of $350 - $400 price range, which is same as that of Grand 1. The price
conscious Indian urban middle class, the biggest group of smart phone buyers have
an average monthly earning of $500, for them the Galaxy Grand 2 is going to be
the most suitable buy. Apple too targeted this segment of consumers by reintroducing
iPhone 4. This is also the reason smartphones and tablets marketed by Indian
brands which are cheaper are more popular than premium devices like iPhone 5s
and Galaxy Note 3.
For all these reasons as per my opinion, Galaxy Grand
2 which ticks all the boxes of pricing, specs and brand name is all set to become
the most popular phone in Indian market among the current crop of smartphones.
